Episode “Zen Trinkets”

Nicole Tomlinson: Some people hand these crystals in their homes and cars, you have seen others wear these beads as necklaces or bracelets, today we will unwrap the mystery behind all these Zen trinkets. Find out what they are all about, luck, healing, or just plain decoration next on Zen Living.
This is Toine and he is going to help explain about all of these trinkets, hi Toine
Toine: Hello.
Nicole Tomlinson: Do these crystals have any special meaning or are they just to look nice?
Toine: Just to look nice and also a decorated I am in the home or in the car.
Nicole Tomlinson: So these beads are pretty too, what are they for, are they also for decoration?
Toine: Malas, they have a lot of in-depth meanings, practically you can use them for practicing chanting or meditating on a mantra or Buddha’s name.
Nicole Tomlinson: How would you use them in chanting?
Toine: You can do it silently or out loud as you finish per section, you can roll one by one, by one.
Nicole Tomlinson: Oh, that is similar to the rosary isn’t it? I see that you have a necklace is that different?
Toine: Well that depends if you’re wearing 108 or 21 at a time. You can wear a short one which is more convenient on your wrist, or one on your neck. This is for maybe when you’re sitting down and engaging in a very long session.
Nicole Tomlinson: I recognize this symbol which is here on the bracelets in here on this Buddha but I have seen it before as the NAZI symbol, the swastika.
Toine: The original sign represents the Buddha but it is the reverse of it that is the swastika.
Nicole Tomlinson: This happy man back here is the one that a lot of westerners recognize as the Buddha and is a lock to rub his belly, is that the tradition?
Toine: Yes if you believe in it deep enough then yes you may get some luck, it is known as the future happy Buddha.
Nicole Tomlinson: So he is known to represent what may go right in our life?
Toine: Yes, all the pain and suffering he will endure and deal with it himself so when you rub the ballet is letting go of your pain and sufferings.
Nicole Tomlinson: What is the symbolism of the jade pendant?
Toine: Well it depends on what it is; if it is a Buddha of course it will bring you luck, compassion, and wisdom.
Nicole Tomlinson: Is it true that the longer that you wear it the greener that it becomes?
Toine: I hope so, and if it does that is good because it means that one as purified himself into a better stage. If it is rubbing against your skin often enough you can have a chemical reaction and change the color of itself.
Nicole Tomlinson: So there can be both a physical and a metaphysical reason for it?
Toine: Yes.
Nicole Tomlinson: Well thank you Toine for your expertise.
Toine: Thank you, no problem
So whether it is whimsical or truly healing the object behind attaining these various gifts varies with each individual so go ahead and have some fun with them. I am Nicole Tomlinson and from all of us at Zen Living thank you so much for watching and we will catch you next time, peace.

<media:text type="html">Zen Living
Episode “Budokon part 1”

Nicole Tomlinson: What do you get when you combine the strength and agility of martial arts with the grace and flexibility of yoga? In the first of this two part series will take a look at Budokon, a Zen workout for the mind and body.
I would like you to meet John Barton one of the teachers of Budokon, hi John.
John: Hi how’re you doing?
Nicole Tomlinson: I’m great and I’m really interested to know, what is Budokon?
John: Well Budokon is a martial arts Saystem that uses yoga and some meditation and brings it all together in a comprehensive conditioning class.
Nicole Tomlinson: So really combines all elements of this mind and body together?
John: Absolutely.
Nicole Tomlinson: Where did it originate?
John: Well it originated with Kancho Cameron Shayne who is the creator of the system; it is just a combination of all the different places that he trains.
Nicole Tomlinson: So what is the basic philosophy of Budokon?
John: The basic philosophy is a Zen philosophy, one of a beginners mind coming to the practice that you’re not necessarily trying to gain something new as much as it is rediscovering an old treasure that has been buried for a while.
Nicole Tomlinson: So you say beginners mind, you don’t have to be very strong in yoga a martial arts to start this?
John: The conditioning aspect of the class is really open to all levels you set the cadence and practice at the levels that you are looking to challenge yourself.
Nicole Tomlinson: How is this better than just yoga alone or martial arts alone?
John: Well just yoga alone is really martial arts frozen so when you’re in a specific posture there is no transition really with any type of intention, you are either coming up off of the mat or going down onto the mat the transition to something else where Budokon is really dynamic and it is integrative, where you’re constantly transitioning from one position to the next, so it can really become seamless in its practice once you cultivate it.
Nicole Tomlinson: And how is it different from martial arts?
John: We look at Budokon as the ability to express movement in many different ways, two of them being yogic elements in our movement, and then there are martial elements of our movement. We do the yogic movements of our practice, the conditioning class and that prepares us for more grace and efficiency when we are doing are budo or our martial movement.
Nicole Tomlinson: It seems like this is something you really have to physically do to understand all of the way.
John: You have to absolutely get your hands on the practice to understand what it is all about.
Nicole Tomlinson: Is there a couple of basic things that you can show me?
John: There sure are absolutely.
Nicole Tomlinson: Let’s get down and do it.
John: So the first one we are going to do is rolling wave, and so from a down dog make sure your shoulders are latterly rotated and getting nice firm grip with the mat, you draw your feet together, so on a inhale I rise up on the balls of my feet. The pelvis is reaching high and the tailbone is reaching low, tuck that pelvis, nice then one vertebra at a time, follow my finger and keep that chin tuck to your chest. Keep it tucked, keep looking, keep looking and hold right here. Once you get to a plank, or this is called a cobra hood you see how, can you feel how that really opens up the scaffoldus, they really move laterally.
From here you release your chin and you drop the pelvis down slowly to an updog, so you’re pushing the ground away you are not collapsed in your shoulder but you are pushing the ground away. Come up and extend up, there you go all of the way. This is where you are from here, the chin tucks into the chest, you push the ground away so that you reach right here, slowly, slowly. Right so you are reaching, that is it you roll all the way back, nice and slow we’re not in a hurry. Now your heels come down to the mat and that is it.
Nicole Tomlinson: Wow. That is really difficult, is this a basic move?
John: This is a staple of the practice.
Nicole Tomlinson: OK.
John: A staple of the practice. From the down dog move your right heel behind you towards the sky, nice hold right here and then we point the foot, so your foot is extended in your toes are flexed. A martial arts foot, so extension and flexion, nice line, pelvis is neutral and the heel is reaching, not a lateral or external rotation it is a neutral pelvis. You want your shoulders laterally rotated and your fingers are spread so your palms have a nice firm grip and here we go, you are pushing into the mat with your hands and you are reaching towards the sky with your foot.
Do you feel that capacity to move in two directions? So here is what is going on here, that heel comes down, and you have a 3 point base and you are reaching, they heel folds back to the back of the thigh and then you roll that knee to your forehead. Shift your weight forward rolling the, nice. So if you are here you just pick your foot up like a kick stand and then you can roll back and extend it to the sky and then the foot comes down, rolling knee.
Nicole Tomlinson: Alright now that I know the basics I can’t wait to get started.
John: Awesome.
Nicole Tomlinson: From all of us at Zen Living thank you so much for watching I am Nicole Tomlinson and we will catch you next time, peace.

<media:text type="html">Zen Living
Episode “Energetic integration”

Nicole Tomlinson: Most people are familiar with the concept of massage. Swedish, Thai, and deep tissue are some of the ones you have probably heard of. In this episode we are going to learn about a more spiritual, gentle form of massage. Called energetic integration. It combines a thorough massaging of the head and neck in addition to all over the body.
This is Jim Hymes a massage therapist who specializes in energetic integration. Hey Jim.
Jim Hymes: Hello.
Nicole Tomlinson: I am really excited to be learning about this today, can you define energetic integration?
Jim Hymes: Yeah, energetic integration is actually my own modality; it is not something you will specifically find anywhere else. And what I do is I fuse traditional Swedish and deep tissue massage with Reiki and Cranio-Sacral therapy and I roll it into one.
It deals with on the energetic level, and it deals with the physical level of the body. As a practitioner what I want to do is provide space for the client to get in a place of resource and really heal themselves. So it goes beyond massage in that is more about healing versus relaxation.
On the physical level it deals with releasing the facial tissue, and in releasing that it creates space and bones will realign themselves on their own.
Nicole Tomlinson: What is reiki?
Jim Hymes: Reiki deals on the energetic level of the human system, a channeling of pure source energy. It is an ancient hands on healing art. How it works is there is a Reiki code in human DNA, it needs to be kind of flipped on. And when that is flipped on you become a more clear channel for source energy.
Nicole Tomlinson: All right then let's flip me on.
Jim Hymes: Let's do it. As you're getting settled in just think about your body and how it feels. Think about an intention. I like to work with intention is really important to know what it is you want to do.
Nicole Tomlinson: I would like to let go of pressure.
Jim Hymes: So today we are going to work on letting go of pressure. So as you are laying here I am just starting by tapping into your energy, your energy, the energy system of your body. And I'm really drawn to your right hip. This is different from massage and that it is like a dialogue, and it is important that if things creep into your mind or your body. Like all of a sudden your wrist starts burning, it is good to share that with me.
Nicole Tomlinson: Can I tell you that for the past four days I have made major pains in the area of my body that you are touching right now.
Jim Hymes: That is not surprising. What I was feeling here is that you are rotated inward in your hip here. So all this motion that is happening I am not initiating. That is just your body releasing. So this is one of the classic holds in Cranio-Sacral therapy. There are some sessions where this is the only place I will go. I can sit here for an hour and all kinds of shifts will happen. This is a really potent place to start. Feels like you're dropping into the still point. And this is just where the systems of your body are just really quiet and still. And this is that place of resource that we look for in Cranio-Sacral therapy.
Nicole Tomlinson: It is like tingling, it feels like eucalyptus was on it or something.
Jim Hymes: It is almost like a cooling sensation, so that is a release. A lot of times at the release you'll have a flash of heat and then cooling. So there has been a shift there. You know what that is, is there is a basic rhythm in the human system that is different from the respiratory rhythm and is different from the heartbeat. And literally your spinal cord and your brain live inside of a sack. And in that is a pure crystalline fluid, there is a rhythm to it and it is on average about 17 beats per minute and it has sort of a wavelike action. What I'm trying to do this tap into that rhythm and feel that rhythm, because that is the most basic one. And there's lots of release happening, it is all tied to your sinuses.
Nicole Tomlinson: You are not touching me right now?
Jim Hymes: I am not touching you right now my fingers are maybe a quarter of an inch off the surface of your skin. So you just had a big release there that is what that big breath was, it actually pushed me away from your body. So as I am working in here to I'm also going to shift a little bit of my attention and bring in some of the Reiki energy, which is happening on its own anyway.
When someone is receiving a Reiki treatment sometimes they feel nothing at all and sometimes they feel heat or tingling sensations. As you lay here start to bring your attention back into the room, back into your body if you are drifting away. Take a moment and open your eyes slowly. How are you doing there?
Nicole Tomlinson: I'm okay.
Jim Hymes: Yeah?
Nicole Tomlinson: Yeah. I could actually feel him moving the different segments of my skull. Or I don't know if you are moving them or they were just moving, but I could feel the space. I could feel the connective tissue between them.
When he was working on my hip I could sense the entire bone structure. Which I guess it's something that you do not normally sense at all. Right now when he just said come back to your body if you have drifted away, I feel like I was actually sunken so far deep into my body. I do not know what it means, I know it is there and I know that it was a form of release. But I still, still can't quite grasp why. And that is enough for me. Because I feel it a lot better. I felt like he was touching me. And then when he said that the movement was being generated by my own body not him. I did not know I thought he was moving me. And the fact that he went immediately to a place that is giving me so much trouble that stirred emotions in me I was floored. And that is when I could not talk anymore. I was like there is no way, how is that possible? It is weird; it is hard to talk about because it makes me emotional actually. So it's, it is not a massage. I would never call it a massage. It is something else. Thank you so much.
Jim Hymes: You are welcome you are so welcome.

<media:text type="html">. Zen Living
Episode “Aroma Therapy”

Nicole: Lavender, citronella, eucalyptus what are they? Those are just some of the popular plant oils used in aromatherapy. Aromatherapy, essential oil or snake oil? We will find out in this episode of Zen living.
This is Lisa Richardson owner of whole body studio and she is here to tell us about aromatherapy. Hey Lisa.
Lisa: Hi, how are you?
Nicole: I am great thank you so very much for having us here. Am very interested to know what is aromatherapy? Because just thought it was something that is in candles and bath salts.
Lisa: On the therapy is simply the use of plant essential oils and volatile oils to improve mental and physical well-being.
Nicole: So it is more than just smelling nice and being pleasant? There is actually benefits to aromatherapy?
Lisa: There are a lot of really wonderful studies that have been done about aromatherapy. There are studies that show that Lavender, which is a really relaxing oil, Can actually increase the alpha waves in your brain, which gives you a sense of calmness. There are some studies which show that aromatherapy can increase the white blood cell content, which increases your defenses.
Nicole: Can there ever be any harm with using essential oils?
Lisa: Essential oils are very strong. The oil term is misleading, they actually come from leaves, and the bloods, and the bark. They are little scent sacks that plants have. When we distill them down they are 75 to a hundred times stronger than on the plant. So they can be irritating to the skin. When we use them, they are using about a 2% ratio a 2% oil to carrier oil.
Nicole: What is a carrier oil?
Lisa: Carrier oil is a unscented oil that is usually used in massage, almond oil or another oil that it is mixed with and it is used in a massage to spread over the skin.
Nicole: Before we came here we had a little talk about some oils that might be helpful for me and is that what we have here?
Lisa: We put together a recipe for you. So the recipe that I put together is addresses allergies and addresses some of the hecticness going on in your life. So there are four essential oils that I have put in here. The first one I put in is mint, mint can help with headaches and it is energizing. The other one I put in your recipe is Ylang Ylang. Ylang Ylang is again a very ancient plant it is like Ylang Ylang and Lavender are kind of the thorozine of the aromatherapy world to me.
Nicole: Say that word again, Thorozine? What is that?
Lisa: It is a really strong sedative that they give people when they are just essentially out of control. Trust me it will calm anyone down, but this is not that strong or in that fast. The interesting thing about Ylang Ylang, what people do not know is it is the top note in Chanel number five. So if you smell it you can smell that it is there.
Nicole: It is a very popular scent; we have a lot of very serene folks out there.
Lisa: The next essential oil that I put in was I put in rosemary oil. Rosemary is a decongestant, it is calming and it has antibacterial properties to it.
Nicole: I love rosemary in cooking. Sigh cannot imagine not loving it in aromatherapy. Mmm, such a great smell.
Lisa: The last thing that we put in is Lavender. And I think people are really familiar with Lavender. It has so many tranquilizer effects; it does so many good things to help people relax. People don't, very few people dislike it so it is easy to use it a lot of places.
Nicole: Once we mix all these together what do we get?
Lisa: What we can do with this, this is going to be used in a massage. You can use it on your skin or in a massage. Or you can put drops, the drops in bathwater. Like I said earlier you can put it in a cup of boiling water and it will make the house smell good. So if you put it in a carrier oil like this and it is put onto your body then it is actually absorbed into your system. And if you smell it, it is absorbed in a different way.
Nicole: Are there some people that shouldn't use aromatherapy?
Lisa: Well most people can use some form of aromatherapy. There is some conditions where you would not want to use it. If you have broken skin or a rash you would not want to use it topically. People that have a compromised immune system, or that are ill, or that have chemotherapy should talk to their physician first. You would not use it in the first trimester of pregnancy, just because it is such a important time and they are so many unknowns.
Nicole: How would you feel about the second or third trimester? It would probably be really good then for a pregnant person.
Lisa: Usually you use a little bit lower concentrate and there are some oils that are great. Ginger helps with morning sickness and mint helps with nausea, it gives you a little energy. Lavender is calming, pregnant women love aromatherapy with their massage.
Nicole: Are there any other risks involved? Is there anything I should be concerned about?
Lisa: Just like anything you want to use it with caution, and you want to use it with common sense. You do not put the oils directly on your skin. They are some things that are sensitizing.
Nicole: Nicole: Are there any sort of oils that we do not have that you would like to talk about?
Lisa: We do not have sandalwood out today. And sandalwood is a wonderful calming scent that a lot of men use. Geranium is also relaxing and tranquilizing, so there are different oils that everyone responds to in a different way.
Nicole: Well they certainly smell wonderful, and it is good to know that they can be effective at treating certain ailments. So the next time you reach for that bug spray that can have DEET or other strong chemicals. Why do you not consider citronella or other essential oils? They are totally natural and can be just as effective. Many thanks to you Lisa for all of your wonderful oils.
Lisa: Your welcome and thank you for letting us talk about this.
Nicole: I am Nicole Tomlinson and from all of us at Zen living thank you so much for watching and we will see you next time. Peace.

<media:text type="html">Zen Living
Episode “Benefits of Massage”

Nicole Tomlinson: I don’t know much about massages but I know it’s got to feel good. Well we will see how good it really feels and all the benefits of real massage, when I get one. Next on Zen Living. This is Joli Offield and she is going to work her magic on me. Hi Joli.
Joli: Hello.
Nicole Tomlinson: I am really excited.
Joli: Well I am really glad this is a really fun process.
Nicole Tomlinson: I just wanted to get a little more information. What should I be looking for? What constitutes a good massage?
Joli: Well there are a lot of different modalities and body work in massage. Really I just think someone who listens to you as a massage therapist and listens to the client. And what they are really looking for. What can I accommodate for you?
Nicole Tomlinson: What did you do to become qualified to become a massage therapist?
Joli: In the state I am in we had to do a three hundred hour course. And then we also had to do what you called continuing education units. And then after that you just continue to take more tests and make sure that you are still certified for the state.
Nicole Tomlinson: So when one is investigating a spa to go to what should you look for?
Joli: Well cleanliness for sure, you know you want to make sure that the face rest that we are going to put up here in a minute. It has a clean disposable or a clean sheeted cover. Also the sheets themselves. You want to make sure that those are clean. Often times they are a little wrinkled or something, but you want to make sure they are clean and the place should look fairly put together. Number two is that there is some sort of certification hung on a wall somewhere. You want to make sure that there is a licensed person.
Nicole Tomlinson: Great, well you want to get started?
Joli: I do. So what we are going to do is I am going to walk out of the room and I am going to let you undress to your level of comfort. I will knock before I come in, and you just say you are ready. And then we will just start the massage. And what I am going to do is I am going to tuck this in so I can get all the way down to the lower back, here. To the sacral border that is here.
Nicole Tomlinson: So what are the benefits of massage?
Joli: Well some of the benefits are circulation, your repertory system, your skeletal system, your muscular system. Also circulation. And like I said flexibility for those who are doing sports massage. And just all over relaxing relief.
Nicole Tomlinson: Who benefits the most from massage?
Joli: I think everyone benefits from massage. You know my clients aren’t just really one person. They wear many, many hats throughout the day. They are athletes, they are a parent, they are an employee, they sit all day in front of a computer and they have a lot of things that they need worked out. And a lot of muscle tension. And sometimes just a place to meditate and breath.
Nicole Tomlinson: Cana anyone get a massage?
Joli: Those are the thing called contraindications. And contraindications typically mean that you shouldn’t get a massage either in a specific area, or for all over body. If you have a contraindication like an open wound, or a rash. That might be a place that a therapist should really avoid, and you should be aware of so that you can tell the therapist when you go to get a massage.
Nicole Tomlinson: What about pregnant women?
Joli: Pregnant women are so lovely to massage. Absolutely, and one of the things that you want to look out for is that if you are passed your third trimester that the therapist sets up a place for you so that you have plenty of bolstering and pillows. And it is a nice comfortable place for you to relax. You should always lay on you side, and you shouldn’t stay on your back too long. So what you really want to do is you want to check with your medical practitioner before you go and get a massage.
Before I doze off I would like to thank my talented massage therapist Jolie, if you can I definitely recommend fitting in a massage every so often. I am Nicole Tomlinson, and from all of us at Zen Living, thank you so much for watching. And we will catch you next time, peace.

Episode “Community Garden”

Nicole Tomlinson: For those if us living in an apartment having a house plant can bring a little bit of nature into our own living space. But if you are craving a more involved garden experience, there is alternatives. Most Major cities have community garden programs, where for a small annual fee you can get a plot of your very own. As we will find out in this episode of Zen Living.
This is Emily Nieman of the sustainable foods center. Hey Emily.
Emily: Hi.
Nicole Tomlinson: I want to talk to you a little bit about the sustainable foods center and it mission.
Emily: Our mission is to create a food stable community by improving access to healthy affordable, local food.
Nicole Tomlinson: Is this place, like I could come in here and get all the tools I need for gardening and all the different fertilizers?
Emily: This particular community garden, the Alamo community garden. It cost fifty dollars for the whole year. And part of that goes to the community tools; we have a community tool shed. So everything is here. People usually get their own seeds and plants. Although many of the gardeners share those resources.
Scott Dubois: I was kind of looking for a spot that would be permanent that I could work at. Because I have been. you know moving around town a little bit. I was always attracted to the idea of having other people help m out in my garden.
Steve Hebbard: I feel like the benefits of community gardening are primarily for me as a novice. Are coming and not having a clue about gardening. I can come and talk to the other guys and girls that work at the garden here. And they can tell me exactly when it is good to harvest and when it is good to wait. And they can give me a clue on all the things that I have got no idea about. I come out about three ties a week. Mostly I come to admire what’s happened. It amazes me I never was introduced to gardening before. I see that it has grown a foot in 2 weeks and it just blows me away that this happens whenever I am not watching, whenever I am not watering, whenever I am not doing anything else.
Nicole Tomlinson: So can you tell m a little bit about the composting process?
Emily: Yeah, that is the whole reason why we eat fruits and vegetables because they are full of nutrients right. And so whenever you take the banana peel or the egg shell that also has nutrients in it. And you don’t want to send those nutrients to the landfill; you want to return them to the soil so you can grow more food.
Yeah this is an organic garden so we don’t use pesticides in this garden. Chemical pesticides, um some people use some sprays made out of hot peppers and garlic, to try to deter the pest away. But usually we just try to keep a balance with the insects here. Where there are both good bugs and bad bugs.
Nicole Tomlinson: And what becomes of the harvest?
Emily: Most of the gardeners grow food here for their personal use, so they take it back to their kitchen. Although I would say probably a hundred percent of gardeners always have excess food to share with fried, family, neighbors, food banks, seniors.
Nicole Tomlinson: Oh that is really nice so you can give back a little to your community too.
Scott Dubois: A lot of the stuff that I grow I give to my friends, my family. You know I just take in a bunch of tomatoes at work. And so at work I just kind of snack on these all day.
Steve Hebbard: I take it home and try to figure out some recipe that can incorporate that vegetable into whatever I like to eat. And so I am trying you bridge my former diet and my new diet and trying to incorporate some new Hodge podge organic mix.
Cedar Stevens: I had so many tomatoes that I had to put a notice up on my neighborhood list serve, and ask my neighbors to come get tomatoes. And boy they sure went for it.
Nicole Tomlinson: So how did this place come into existence? And how can we form other gardens in our community?
Emily: First of all there was a need in this community. Many people ion this area have shady yards, or might live in apartments. And so the all just came together and they found an open site a vacant plot of land. And they just all decided to all go together to grow food in it.
Scott Dubois: The hardest part can be weeding. It is a little discouraging to come out and see your garden covered in other sorts of greenery. Well I think the benefits of community gardening are meeting people. Definitely, I have met a lot of cool friends out here. And just the general health benefits associated with gardening are pretty important too.

Steve Hebbard: The primary reason that people have given up gardening is because there lives have become so autonomous. So singled out that they have gone off and been alone. It is enjoyable when you come with other people and you are enjoying the same thing. And you can have parties and you can enjoy what you have done together.
Cedar Stevens: You know gardening benefits everyone. From the personal spiritual level, to the community level. On up to the whole world. There is something very life affirming about gardening for yourself. And gardening promotes a kind of sanity I think. Knowing where your food comes from is very important to human mental health, as a culture. This is how you learn how to live on this planet in a wholesome way.
Nicole Tomlinson: So people do really know by now that organic is really the way to go, but local is actually much better.
Emily: Yes local is actually a lot fresher and can actually be more nutritious for you. If you are having hesitations about starting a garden, go for it. Because once you get into it, it is going to be with you for the rest of your life. You are going to want to grow food for the rest of your life.
Nicole Tomlinson: Well thank you so much for having us here in your garden.
Emily: Thank you I enjoyed your visit.
Nicole Tomlinson: So if you would like to get your own vegetable plot but don’t have the space at home look into local community gardening programs. It is a great way to get back to nature and put some good, organic, local foods on the dinner table. I am Nicole Tomlinson and from all of us here at Zen Living, thank you so much for watching. And we will catch you next time. Peace.

Episode “Sweet Alternatives”

Nicole: I don’t know about you but I have a sweet tooth. Nirvana for me would be desserts 24/7 and I wouldn’t get fat. Or suffer any of the other consequences of eating too much refined white sugar. Yeah right, what if I told you there was a way we could satisfy our cravings and still avoid refined white sugar too? We will find some sweet alternatives on this episode of Zen living.
I am here with juice maestro Keith Wahrer of the Daily Juice. What’s up Keith?
Keith: What’s up?
Nicole: Now we are here to talk about how to satisfy our sweet cravings. And still stay away from sugar.
Keith: Yes.
Nicole: Why is sugar so unhealthy for us?
Keith: It has been linked to various things including obesity which is a major issue. As well as it causes problems like diabetes, which is a growing epidemic in this country.
Nicole: Type 2 diabetes is trouble for a lot of people. They can’t even have sugar anymore. So what can we do to satisfy our cravings and avoid too much sugar so that we can maybe stay healthier longer?
Keith: Well one of the things we can do is simply substitute sugar, in place use something more natural and something that would less affect our blood sugar levels.
Nicole: So all the things we have in front of us are going to do just that?
Keith: Yes.
Nicole: But this looks to me just like plain old white sugar. What is this?
Keith: Actually this is, it does look like white sugar and it is something called Xylitol. And it is a sugar alcohol. So it is a natural sweetener that doesn’t spike your blood sugar levels and it is very low in calories.
Nicole: I am going to put a little bit in my hand here. That is pretty sweet. Yeah, it taste like candy.
Keith: It does it has kind of got maybe a little bit milder sweet than sugar but it’s a very nice flavor. So that is a useful product. Another good option is dates. Or date sugar. These are some dates right here. You have probably seen dates before. Dates are great; you can put a date or two in a smoothie to sweeten it. Another great thing about dates is that they are very high in dietary fiber. So a lot of people get their fiber form eating an energy bar that might have dates in it.
The next thing I would like to talk about is something s simple as fruit juice. It has lots of trace minerals and vitamins. This is apple juice; all of the smoothies that we make at my juice bar are sweetened with fruit juice. Another sweetener I would like to talk about is Stevia. Stevia is also very low calorie, safe for diabetics. Extremely low on the glycimic count.
Nicole: So you said Stevia is an herb, do you have Stevia growing in your back yard or anywhere.
Keith: Um, I do know people that grow Stevia yeah.
Nicole: What is the difference between the Stevia we grow and the Stevia that is in this bottle?
Keith: This has pure grain alcohol and vegetable glycerin. My number one all natural sweetener that I use the most is raw agave nectar. I use it in place of let’s say honey, or maple syrup. It has a flavor that is somewhere between honey and maple syrup.
Nicole: I am going to take a big sip of this and hopefully I don’t…
Keith: You might want to take a small sip.
Nicole: Pass out form pleasure. Mmm, that does taste a little bit like honey but not so much. It is interesting.
Keith: And agave nectar has a wonderful flavor, it is very mild it doesn’t overtake whatever it is you put it in. It blends really nicely with things. It is great in smoothies. It is great, you can make with agave nectar, substituting part liquid and part sugar.
Nicole: Well thanks for showing us that we have so many choices.
Keith: My pleasure.
Nicole: We can’t deny our sweet craving. I know I can’t. And it is a relief to know that we don’t have to. I am Nicole Tomlinson and from all of us here at Zen living. Thank you so much for watching, and we will see you next time.

Episode “Master Cleanse”

Nicole: If you have ever fasted or heard about fasting you will know it takes great discipline. Fasting is a common Buddhist custom. Practiced to cleanse the body and will self discipline. It is an exercise in mind and body. We will learn about a safe and effective drink, called master cleanse, to both purify the body, and lose weight.
I am here with the Juice Maestro, Keith Wahrer of the daily juice, and we are going to talk a little bit about the master cleanse. Hi Keith.
Keith: Hi.
Nicole: So briefly, what is a fast?
Keith: A fast is a period of time where someone will subject themselves where they stop eating food of any kind and consume only liquids.
Nicole: So that doesn’t necessarily mean just water. You can consume juices?
Keith: yes, you can do a juice fast, master cleanse is a popular juice fast.
Ivy Minnis: Well when I first started the master cleanse, it was a little difficult the first time. Because I was in the mindset of thinking I had to eat every meal and you know just carrying that mindset with me.
Bob Winters: Fasting for one day it really showed me how much that I thought about food. And how much food is a part of our lives.
Keith: The idea with the master cleanse is that your body is getting the bare minimum that It needs to survive for ten days. The benefits of fasting come from not eating. Because when you stop eating, your body naturally goes into a cycle of detoxification and cleansing.
Ivy Minnis: You know after the first couple of days it is sort of like you are in a different realm. It is like you are in a different mindset than everyone else. Like you see food around you but you don’t really want to eat it.
Bob Winters: A lot of times people fall victim to the diet that their diet controls them. Because the body becomes a habit to eat certain foods. During the master cleanse, during the 10 day fast. I drink a gallon of this a day, how much of this do I drink a day?
Keith: Yes, on average I would say a gallon a day is a good amount.
Nicole: Wow that is a lot of liquid.
Keith: It seems like a lot, it’s amazing though when you’re not eating it goes pretty quickly. You do want to be sure to have it with you at all times. Because you want to make sure to stay hydrated. And you burn those calories that are in the maple syrup pretty much immediately.
Bob Winters: On the master cleanse you can really do it as many days as you feel to do it. It is recommended to do ten days.
Nicole: I have heard of celebrities who have used this in order to lose weight for upcoming film roles. Do you recommend it for weight loss?
Keith: You probably will lose some weight, but you will probably gain it right back afterwards if you begin eating your regular diet. I recommend using the fats an s a way of rebooting and changing your diet from that point on, your diet can change.
Ivy Minnis: Whenever I did the master cleanse and I did fasting, I actually had more energy. I didn’t feel bad, so it was pretty good.
Nicole: It seems like if you’re going to make the commitment to go ten days without eating. That you probably have to be at a good place to restart your life in general.
Keith: It is an amazing thing when you fast; it brings an awareness of your diet. You become aware of what it is that you’re creating. So fasting is really good for learning about yourself.
Bob Winters: I have done the master cleanse several times. And I have done it with incorporating other elements in it. Spirulina, Himalayan crystal salt.
Nicole: And these are the ingredients for the master cleanse right here?
Keith: What we have, this is maple syrup. With the maple syrup we get the sugars that we need for our energy.
Nicole: We have grade b maple syrup. Lemon juice. How much lemon do we use?
For a gallon of water, we take out about 20oz of that water and then we are going to put in about 11oz of maple syrup, 8oz of lemon juice, and 1 tsp. cayenne pepper.
Nicole: alright before I go over the edge, I am going to see if I can actually stomach this. See what it taste like. That’s a big glass. You know, ooh that cayenne is really spicy. Right there at the very end, but it is actually pretty good. It is an interesting combination to put cayenne and maple syrup together.
Keith: It is kind of spicy lemonade.
Nicole: So I bet after ten days you really start to like this though.
Keith: like it or hate it.
Nicole: everyone kind of has their own.
Keith: Well you know you get tired of the same thing after ten days, but it is not so much about liking it. It is about doing it for your health.
Nicole: Well thank you so much for telling us about fasting.
Keith: My pleasure.
Nicole: It is a great way to purify the body but please consult your physician before you decide to begin one. I am Nicole Tomlinson and form all of us at Zen living, thank you so much for watching, and we will see you next time. Peace.

Episode “Baltic Mud Wrap”

Nicole: Surrounded by the Scandinavian countries in northern Europe, the Baltic Sea has one of nature’s best defenses against skin damage. The slow decomposition of its material throughout its 30,000 year history is what gives the Baltic its ability to hydrate the skin and promote cell oxygenization. But you don’t have to go all the way to northern Europe to experience the benefits. We will bring the Baltic mud to you, on this episode of Zen living.
This is Janine Manjarras and she is going to be giving me the black Baltic mud treatment. Hi Janine.
Janine: Hi.
Nicole: Can you explain the steps we are going to be going through really fast?
Janine: I am going to dry brush your body first. It is a dry exfoliation, and then I will place you on the table, and place a small layer. A thin layer of mud over your body. Wrap you up in the plastic and the towels. And let you cook a little bit. And then it will be time to remove the mud and do a nice moisturizer all over your body.
Nicole: So first you are going to brush me like a horse?
Janine: Yes. And they are nice strokes, and this is to get the dead skin cells off. It also helps with circulation.
Nicole: It feels pretty good to actually.
Janine: You do it towards the heart to help with that stimulation. There is another technique you can use. You can also do the wet exfoliation, which is a cream exfoliator. As you see there is a slight red, pink tone to her body when you brush. It’s stimulating.
Nicole: So this is where you turn me into a burrito?
Janine: Yes.
Nicole: What can I expect while laying down here?
Janine: Um, just feel calm and confident that I am going to take care of you. And you just place a small layer of mud all over the body. And once again, this mud takes all the impurities out, clogged pours. People ask if it helps you lose weight, because a lot of body wraps do. And this actually helps the skin feel a lot smoother. It helps it tighten. How are you doing?
Nicole: It feels good; it is really warm and soft. Where do you get it from?
Janine: This actually comes from European fresh water. The mud is silts; it is organic as far as old rocks and dirt that have been mixed together.
Nicole: So what is actually in it?
Janine: There are vitamins, its vitamin A and all of the B’s. There is minerals; it is forty percent humic acid, which is part of an alpha hydroxyl acid. It has the jojoba oil in it. Peach, avocado, sunflower.
Nicole: Would this be good for somebody who has rosacea or Psoriasis or eczema?
Janine: Eczema, it would be really great for eczema or the Psoriasis, because it is all natural and it helps detoxify the body. I would say that it makes the eczema and the Psoriasis really smooth.
Nicole: It is kind of opening my nasal passages which is cool because they have been stuffed. And it’s really soft and smooth. I can’t describe the feeling. It’s not like lotion, but it’s not gritty at all. It is nice to know that something that feels so good is actually really healthy for you.
Janine: Nicole how are you doing?
Nicole: I am great what do we do next?
Janine: I am going to wrap your body. And this helps the mud penetrate and keep the heat in. You want to have a nice tight wrap; I am going to wrap you like a cocoon. I am going to put the towels over you that also helps keep the heat in. The next few steps would be to wrap her in the foil. And then I am going to place a cold stone on her forehead, and that helps center the body and keep the body cool.
Nicole: As soon as you put the foil on it started to kind of warm up a bit in here.
Janine: Mmm hmm, it will. You will be very warm and then the rock will help you cool and center. Now you are going to lie here for the next fifteen minutes so the mud will penetrate the body, penetrate the skin and make it feel a lot smoother. And then after that we will unwrap you and remove the mud with the warm towels.
Nicole: The stone is actually very relaxing, the little pressure right there onto the center of your forehead. It really just takes all the worries away. Next time you visit your spa you might want to think about getting the black Baltic mud treatment for yourself, now that you know all its benefits, you might want to do some god for your own skin. I am Nicole Tomlinson, and from all of us at Zen Living thanks for watching. We will catch you next time, peace.

Episode “Youth Gardening”

Nicole Tomlinson: Thomas Jefferson once said of himself, though and old man I am but a young gardener. Well we are about to meet some truly young gardeners, who are learning the joys of growing food.
This is Emily Neiman of the sustainable food center, Hi Emily.
Emily Neiman: Hi, how are you?
Nicole Tomlinson: Good, I wanted to ask you a few questions about your youth program.
Emily Neiman: Well, we are working with the Alamo recreation center summer kids program, it is a city run program and they just happen to be right across the street from Alamo community garden. And so the kids can just walk right across the street to come over here and learn about where there food comes from.
Nicole Tomlinson: Well you look like our having lots of fun over here what’s your name?
Becka: My name is Becka.
Nicole Tomlinson: Is it really nice when you plant something and then you see what come out of the ground, what you made. How does that feel?
Becka: It feels good, because we are planting watermelons. And when they grow we are going to take them inside and wash them and eat them. I like helping my friends and making them feel good.
Nicole Tomlinson: So what do you know that the kids take away form this experience?
Emily Neiman: I like for them to really learn and understand where food comes from a lot of them they go to grocery stores and they think that grocery stores is where food comes from. They don’t realize that someone has put in countless hours to grow that food and learning what the process is from seed all the way up until it gets to your table.
Nicole Tomlinson: Hey Jerome, what is your favorite thing about gardening up here?
Jerome: My favorite thing is like, to come out here and help make this place a better garden for people to come in and look at.
Nicole Tomlinson: So what kind of foods do you grow?
Jerome: I like to, well watermelons, pineapples and stuff like that.
Nicole Tomlinson: Pineapples here?
Jerome: Yeah, I think.
Nicole Tomlinson: that’s awesome so how big do they get, the watermelons? Do they get huge?
Jerome: They get pretty big.
Nicole Tomlinson: How long does it take to grow one?
Jerome: About a couple of months. Like when I come, is it finished? No, then I go back doing things. Is it finished? No, go back doing things. Come back, is it finished? When it finally grows it makes me feel like I did a great thing.
Nicole Tomlinson: I see a bat house over there, are there really bats in there?
Jerome: Yeah.
Nicole Tomlinson: What are they for?
Jerome: they are for, to like if we see any mosquitoes or anything come over here, there is a whole bunch of mosquitoes so the bats will go and eat it.
Emily Neiman: If you wanted to set up a gardening program maybe to get your kids involved one good way is to start a vegetable garden in your back yard or front yard. Even of you don’t have a backyard or a front yard. It is really easy to grow just a few vegetables in a container. Or you can start talking to your child’s school, or maybe talking to some of the teachers and see if they are interested in getting a vegetable garden started at school.
Nicole Tomlinson: so you can actually send people out to particular schools wherever and set up a little sustainable garden right there on campus?
Emily Neiman: Yeah we would love for every school everywhere to have a sustainable vegetable garden.
Nicole Tomlinson: So this is not just very unique and specific to this location? We could do this everywhere all over the country.
Emily Neiman: Right. Yeah, now when we first started I remember the kids would come over and they were kind of shy about touching the plants and touching the earth. Now I think after they have been working together for a month and a half, with there hands. Working on something to produce something. They really have, maybe heightened there self esteem.
Nicole Tomlinson: Sop they get more confidence by watching something they produced by themselves?
Emily Neiman: Right. I think the kids really build strong friendships here in the garden. And they learn how to work together, and teamwork. They like a lot of things about the garden but I think they are very favorite thing are all the bugs that they get to see.
Nicole Tomlinson: They grow the food, it comes out ready to be harvested, what happens to it? Do they take it home to their families?
Emily Neiman: sometimes, it depends on what, if they want to have a snack. Last time week for example we had some tomatoes and some Alamo spinach. And we took it into the Alamo rec center and washed it off and sliced up the tomatoes. And they made sandwiches the bottom being spinach leaf. The top being a spinach leaf. And then in the middle they had a slice of tomato. And they just ate it fresh out of the garden.
Nicole Tomlinson: And they liked it?
Emily Neiman: Yes.
Nicole Tomlinson: You got the kids to eat their vegetables?
Emily Neiman: Yes.
Nicole Tomlinson: So really parents, of you want to get your kids to eat their vegetables have them grow them.
Emily Neiman: They have such a strong connection to the vegetables that they started from a little tiny seed all the way up.
Nicole Tomlinson: That is amazing. Well there you go, of your every curious on how to get your kids to eat spinach and tomatoes, I know they could never get me to do it when I was a kid. So if you have kids, or are yourself of school age, why don’t you look into a local youth gardening program. It is a great way to learn about the food we eat and the best part is you get to play with bugs.
I am Nicole Tomlinson and from all of us at Zen Living, thank you so much for watching, and we will catch you next time. Peace.

Episode “Chemical Sensitivity”

Nicole: You can’t hug your mom without getting dizzy. You can’t kiss your spouse without getting headaches and swelling. You can’t go to a restaurant or a crockery store without fainting. Going through life with chemical sensitivity is a life of isolation and inconvenience. We will meet with Alyssa Alvord, who will share her story of chemical sensitivity and her road to recovery.
Alyssa Alvord: I started with a lot of fatigue and migraine headaches and joint pain and muscle pain. I went to several doctors and no one could identify what the problem was. So I got considerably worse. My problems worsened to the point where I wasn’t able to walk by myself. And finally I met a physician ho suggest that I might have been chemically poisoned.
The main chemicals that sowed up were Formaldehyde, chlorine, and benzene. Those are in most building products, most floor, and carpet and paints, insulations.
Dr. Patricia Rosen: I don’t think that most general physicians will be aware of what multiple chemical sensitivity is. After reviewing many articles on this and seeing people who believed they had multiple chemical sensitivity. The scientific basis is that people notice a odor and develop symptoms. It is not really possible to be sensitive to chemicals that have totally different structures. So because you’re sensitive or irritated by the odor of a perfume, would not mean you are really sensitive or allergic to the odor of gasoline. Even though they are both petrochemicals.
George Swanson: Starting around the mid 80’s or the late 90’s people started to seal there homes much, much tighter than they had.
Nicole: how did they seal there homes?
George Swanson: Typically with a paper barrier put in there wall, or with a energy efficient windows and doors that were sealed very tightly.
Nicole: So they thought they were doing themselves a favor?
George Swanson: Right, but they were trapping, the toxic outgases from the materials were being trapped in the buildings.
Nicole: And what are some other things that constitute a sick building?
George Swanson: Well typically mold behind the walls. Trapped moisture, modern building materials that often use different types of polymers that would again trap moisture.
Alyssa Alvord: We purchased a very small kind of matchbox house. It was about 800 square feet. And gutted it.
Jon Alvord: We got rid of all the flooring. We tore out all the cabinets we didn’t need. We repainted everything with non toxic paints. We replaced all the air filtration that was in the house and tore out everything that was not absolutely essential for our living.
Alyssa Alvord: Even just sleeping on a organic cotton futon that was thrown on the floor, all of a sudden I was sleeping. And I hadn’t been sleeping regularly in years.
Jon Alvord: And then within about 2-4 weeks being in there she was back on her feet, to speaking clearly. Very coherent mentally.
Nicole: What about our carpet?
George Swanson: Even more so, right, everything gravity is pushing everything down to the bottom of the carpet and building up over the years. And combine that with moisture created from a pipe or a paper barrier under the concrete, and it becomes a excellent area for growing mold.
Dr. Patricia Rosen: There are certain rules that regulate air quality in a occupational setting that you don’t have in your own home. And because we now have air conditioning and have closed up our homes to save on fuel, we are more at risk for problems with air quality within our own homes
Alyssa Alvord: Some of the circumstances that contributed to it is that I grew up around a lot of chemical plants. My dad worked in chemical plants, and I worked in hair salons and spas. You build up a masking type phenomenon really where you don’t even notice for awhile. And then there is a tipping point for every person. So I just reached my tipping point.
We do know many of these chemicals are canceragenic. So for some people its cancer for some people its chemical sensitivity. For some people its adult onset ADD, or asthma. Or just different, it runs the gamut; there are probably twenty different things. For some people its lupus or other auto immune diseases. So there is kind of a laundry list of things that can happen. And what happened to me is generally termed automatic nervous system failure.
Dr. Patricia Rosen: The difference between a poison and a medicine is the does. So if someone is to go and drink a glass of water a day or eight glasses of water a day, they are not going to be poisoned. But if you go run a race and drink just water and don’t replace your electrolytes you can actually get poisoned by that water. And the clinical facts are you drop your sodium and you become nauseated and very ill. So theoretically anything can be a poison.
Alyssa Alvord: I was putting myself in a lot of really toxic places and not realizing it. So for example going to the grocery store where they have scented candles by the checkout. I didn’t know why every time I went to the checkout I was just dropping. So once we had more information, and we realized oh, those are artificially scented candles. Ok, once you put two and two together its easy to avoid those things to start to feel better.
Jon Alvord: And it becomes one of these situations where if you love the person, then you are going to commit to it. And there is a lot of people who don’t believe it is actually a real problem. And so as a result there are people who, and we have friends who are chemically sensitive whose spouse does not stop wearing colognes, perfumes, they don’t change there cleaning supplies. They don’t do anything. And they never have gotten any better.
Dr. Patricia Rosen: You can’t be allergic to all chemicals, because they all have different structures, and most of them are not allergenic. People who are sensitive to specific materials in those locations should be cautious. As you go through the grocery store if they are using metabysulfides and you are allergic to metabysulfides, which is what they spray sometimes on the vegetables to make them look green. You are going to get ill. You can become ill.
Jon Alvord: If she was out in a situation I could see something was going wrong. Sometimes it was physical signs, like a whole side of her face would swell like a soccer ball. And she was fine when she walked in. And her tongue would swell up, where she would open her mouth and it would be this big old sausage sitting there, you know. I was wondering why I couldn’t understand what she was saying. Because she couldn’t speak because her tongue would swell up. And we would be on opposite sides of the store and I would be calling her, you know you got to get away from there because they are cleaning, the guys using Windex or something over there.
Come on over, and she would look at me and say I can’t move I am trying to move, I can’t move. And so I would literally put my arm around her and take her out of the store. You know, forget it, we just put our items down and we go. And about a hour later after we left the swelling would go away and the swelling would go down in her tongue, and then she would be back to thinking clearly. But in that moment that whole fog would happen and she just couldn’t even function.
Alyssa Alvord: And now I can go to movies, I can go to the grocery store. I can do these things for a short amounts of time and be ok. I couldn’t stay there for eight hours, but I can live a pretty normal life, I can go out to eat, I can go do these things.
Nicole: We all respond to our environment differently, but thanks to people like Alyssa, we can be more aware of the chemicals just from going about our daily life’s. I am Nicole Tomlinson, and from all of us at Zen Living thank you so much for watching and we will catch you next time. Peace.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Have you ever looked at the back of your shampoo bottle and not been
able to pronounce any of the ingredients on the label? What kind of chemicals
are we putting on our body’s everyday? I am here with Amy Holland who is going
to answer just those questions. Hi Amy.

Amy Holland:
Hi Nicole.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Now I see a wall full of personal products back here can you explain
a little bit about some of them?

Amy
Holland: Our Company tries to buy
products that are made with organics as well as natural ingredients. To get
away from some synthetics. Naming a few would be Methyl Paraben’s, polypropylenes,
Laurel sulfates. Along with heavy fragrances that are synthetically done. The
more natural we can get our ingredients to be the healthier its going to be for
our skin and hair and environment.

Nicole
Tomlinson: would you say that using this product is going to be better in the
long run for our bodies?

Amy Holland:
Absolutely.

Nicole
Tomlinson: What about our water supply. Because you wash your air and those
chemicals go right down the drain and into our water supply.

Amy Holland:
You have got it.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Do you have any organic hair dyes?

Amy Holland:
We have botanical hair as well as Jason’s puts out one.

Nicole
Tomlinson: This is a wash out?

Amy Holland:
Right over time and that’s a more permanent coloring.

Nicole
Tomlinson: So how long doe these last normally?

Amy Holland:
Probably different hair styles and different hair textures can take it for
different lengths of time but I would say for a couple of months.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Really well that is about the same that mine last, so it’s pretty
comparable. What’s another really good product you would recommend?

Amy Holland:
Well, there is the Weleda line they make wonderful salves and lotion and oils
just to massage your bodies with and there all organic.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Nice they smell good.

Amy Holland:
Yeah and everybody recognizes Buts Bee’s, that’s a wonderful company because
they do label on the front of their product, how much of there product is
natural and they are shooting for a 100%. They are not organic but they are natural
and there company uses recycled material in there packaging which I really respect.
Along with using soy based inks.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Apple cider vinegar shampoo? I read that if you put a little apple
cider vinegar in your hair it makes it shinier. Is there any other benefits we
should know about?

Amy Holland:
This is a very interesting line of shampoos its morocco method, and their more
or less like mud.

Nicole
Tomlinson: A little bit like clay I guess so the consistency is pretty thick
and muddy? What about day to day stuff we use all the time like toothpaste?

Amy Holland:
you know there is a wide variety of toothpaste everybody is trying to get away
from fluorides because we already have fluoride in our water. And tea tree of
course is wonderful for freshening everything. It’s a antibacterial agent.

Nicole
Tomlinson: So this is all to take care of me and you but what about to take
care of the little ones?

Amy Holland:
Again Weleda is the company that we know and trust. They are doing Bio-dynamic
Gardening. They have supplied us with organic Calendula which is great for a baby’s
skin. And the soap also has Calendula in it I believe along with organic
ingredients.

The diaper
cream has zinc, sunscreens should all have that as a major ingredient, titanium
dioxide. Zinc and titanium dioxide I am using interchangeably, and there a
reflective agent. When you put that on it tends to turn you a little bit white
sometimes but it’s reflecting the sun away from you and it really is the best.
The chemicals that are in the sunscreens that are on the market today actually
change when the sun hits them and can become very toxic.

We like to
look at the big picture of being sustainable on every level. On your own body
as well as how you are impacting the world.

Nicole
Tomlinson: So next time you are looking to stock up your medicine cabinet maybe
you should check the labels! Thank you so much Amy for having us here today and
from all of us at Zen living, thank you for watching. I am Nicole Tomlinson and
we will catch you next time, peace.

that we can wear Zen? That’s right I am wearing organic, natural, chemical free

body. Today we will show you how to dress for health and best of all for style.

I am here
with Amy Holland, owner of Eco wise, and she is going to explain a little bit
about what I am wearing. Hi am how are you today?

Amy Holland:
I am fine thank you. You look great.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Oh thank you so much, now I am wearing clothing from your store and
its all organic right?

Amy Holland:
Yeah, what makes it organic is the fact that it is grown without pesticides.
And doesn’t need fertilizers to grow.

Nicole
Tomlinson: So this was basically hemp?

Amy Holland:
It is Hemp.

Nicole

Amy Holland:
It’s a weed.

Nicole

so important and healthy for us to wear clothing with low impact dies and
organic materials?

Amy Holland:
It’s healthy for us as individuals because we don’t want a lot of chemicals
right next to our bodies. And it is healthy for the planet to start buying
things that are beneficial to the soils so that we are creating a lifestyle
that can keep on generating. Rather than killing off our soil.

Nicole

about them?

Amy Holland:
Those pants are from china they are organically grown hemp and cotton. 55%
hemp. Hemp is a great alternative fiber, its light and wears well. As well as
being something that doesn’t take pesticides or fertilizers to grow. And it
looks great, the style is wonderful.

Nicole

Episode “Holistic
Solutions to stress”

Nicole
Tomlinson: Your tired, stressed and energy where did it all go? Today we are
going to explore how holistic medicine can distress your life and give you more
energy. I am here with Luisa Mendoza from Nr. Natural and she is going to give
us some advice on how to reduce stress in our lives. The natural way. Hi Luisa
how are you?

Luisa
Mendoza: Hi, I am fine how are you?

Nicole
Tomlinson: Very good, we really want to know today about how to relieve stress
in a natural way.

Luisa
Mendoza: Well, the natural way is really good to do it because then we are
having the help of the herbs. Like this herbs that we have here on the table.
Like this one is the Tela flower.

Nicole
Tomlinson: The tela flower?

Luisa
Mendoza: Uh huh, tela flower is a very fine flower that makes a very nice tea.
It doesn’t have a bad taste it is very good. This one that I have here is the
pepper mint; the smell of the pepper mint is like a chewable gum. Chewable gum
has the extract of the oil of the pepper mint tea and is very good. It is very
relaxing but also has another benefit. Like taking out the gasses from the
intestine or for little kids that they have stress, they can take this tea before
they go to sleep.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Wait hold on one second, little kids have stress?

Luisa
Mendoza: Sometimes they do exactly. I have to mention that sometimes the little
ones they watch some movies that they are scared. Or maybe something happen to
them like being part of a accident or a family exclusion or any violence that they
may be exposed to. Then they can take this kind of herbal tea so they can
release all sorts of stress.

And also
this one is the hoja anaranjada, or the orange leaf. And its also very good
tea. When you take it fresh from the tree it’s very aromatic but so the dry
leaf has still the botanical extracts. I
have this, the basil. Basil has the properties of a super relaxant in the
herbal system. And the top of them is this one. You don’t want to smell it.

Nicole
Tomlinson: No I don’t, but I am going to anyway.

Luisa
Mendoza: Ok, go ahead and be brave.

Nicole
Tomlinson: This Is Valerian?

Luisa
Mendoza: Mmm hmm, Valerian.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Ok, I am being brave here; I can smell it from here actually. MMM.

Luisa
Mendoza: You don’t have to get so much close. Ah ha I know the smell is strong.

Nicole
Tomlinson: This is how they derive the drug valium?

Luisa
Mendoza: Yes, that is the extract from this root.

Nicole
Tomlinson: But you don’t need a prescription to this and its non addictive.

Luisa
Mendoza: Oh no because it’s very well measured by nature. And we have the other
one that is poleo. I love this one the poleo because it has also very good
taste and is very aromatic and is also relaxing. Which combination do you want
to make?

Luisa
Mendoza: We can put a little bit…

Nicole
Tomlinson: No, no, no, no…

Luisa
Mendoza: We can pass up that one.

Nicole
Tomlinson: I have a busy day ahead of me I cant be falling asleep. I like that
peppermint.

Luisa
Mendoza: What about tela, the tela flower.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Yes, the pretty one.

Luisa
Mendoza: And the poleo, I will invite you to try this one. It’s very little you
don’t really need a lot for one cup of tea. Let it steep for awhile and you
will see the color changing immediately.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Pretty fast.

Luisa
Mendoza: Pretty fast exactly, and then you can drink the tea with a little bit
of honey before you go to sleep.

Nicole
Tomlinson: For a very stressed person you would need to use this entire
combination and its also not going to do us much good unless we allow the
appropriate time for our bodies to actually rest and recuperate.

Luisa
Mendoza: Exactly we need to follow the nature’s advice. When we are
overstressed we need to stop and reaccommodate our agenda of activities because
otherwise we get over consuming our own energy.

Nicole
Tomlinson: So how long does it take for my tea to be ready?

Luisa
Mendoza: Your tea is ready. You don’t have to wait too much. Do you want some
honey?

Nicole
Tomlinson: Please.

Luisa
Mendoza: Well this tea may be very good for you and then tonight you are going
to have a good night of sleep don’t worry.

Nicole
Tomlinson: that sounds good because it has been a very busy week.

Luisa
Mendoza: The weeks are always busy. You are taking exams at the school you are
working, you have two jobs. You have to relax, let your body to be just happy.
There are some vitamins that we can take like the stress b-complex. And
b-complex will work wonderful. Just make sure you are taking fresh orange
juice. So then you have the vitamin c for the body to absorb the B complex.

Nicole
Tomlinson: I see so that will give us energy through our day and this will help
us relax and recuperate from those days.

Luisa
Mendoza: Exactly.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Will we are out of time and you are out of excuses. Be kind to your
body and give it the natural medicine that it needs to feel better Thank you so
much Luisa for having us in your store today.

Luisa
Mendoza: Thank you Nicole come again.

Nicole

watching and we will catch you next time. Peace.

Zen Living

Episode “Acupuncture
for Fertility”

Nicole
Tomlinson: For millions of Americans having a baby and starting a family is as
natural as life itself. However, when if hit roadblocks and found themselves
unable to conceive, many turn to IBF and many other not so natural solutions.
What if there was a more natural way to help Mother Nature along? We are here
today with Kirsten Karchmer who is going to guide us through the process of
acupuncture for fertility.

This is Kirsten,
and she is going to tell us how acupuncture can assist in the treatment of
infertility. Hi Kirsten.

Kirsten
Karchmer: Hi, how are you?

Nicole
Tomlinson: Very good. Now in regards to fertility, who is a prime candidate to
undergo treatment for infertility?

Kirsten
Karchmer: That is a good question. We divide it into three categories. In our
practice we specialize in infertility, and ovulation disorders, and miscarriage
prevention. There are very few patients who are not a good candidate for infertility
treatments in general. A lot of times we find that patients who have the least
success rates are patients who have very large uterine fibroids. Or who have
some kind of blockage of the fallopian tunes. Those things need to be
surgically removed. Acupuncture is not going to remove those tings.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Right. Once we decide ok, I am a good candidate. How do we start?

Kirsten
Karchmer: Well what happens is first you come for a consultation with a
licensed acupuncturist. In that consultation the acupuncturist should take
about an hour or hour and a half first of all to explain what he or she does
and answer all your questions, and then do a comprehensive health history.

When we are
treating infertility our goal is to understand why do you have what you have.
Why does this person have infertility who is thirty four years old versus this
person who doesn’t have infertility who is the same age and has similar health.

Nicole
Tomlinson: I see.

Kirsten
Karchmer: Many problems can sauce infertility; it can be the blood not moving
in the uterus. There can be an inability to make enough blood, so the uterine
lining doesn’t build up thick enough for implantation to occur. So there are
many, many reasons why somebody may have a hard time either getting pregnant,
or ovulating, or staying pregnant. And we are trying to decide that on the
first appointment.

Alyssa: My
husbands and I tried on our own for close to six months and had no success then
went to a doctor and I had problems with all sorts of hormonal imbalances and
things so I started taking Clomid and doing iui’s which are intra-uterine
inseminations for several months and none of that worked. I was found to have mild
to moderate endometriosis so I had a lot of that cleared out with the surgery
and that could have been a factor that was keeping us from getting pregnant.

Marla: Over
a year’s time I wasn’t menstruating regularly, they didn’t believe I was
ovulation. I didn’t believe I was ovulation. For a year or a few months they
prescribed a drug called Clomid, and still taking ovulation productive kits it
wasn’t coming out positive. So again I wasn’t believing I was ovulating, and
the medicine was having a negative impact. So I decided I wasn’t going to do
any kind of medication. If I couldn’t get pregnant naturally in some way then
maybe that wasn’t the path for us.

Nicole
Tomlinson: So once we have the consultation and all of those things are worked
out. Then what do we do? Do we go in on the table and start getting the pins?

Kirsten
Karchmer: On the second appointment, that’s when we start doing acupuncture.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Is it instantaneous? Like I can go home and get pregnant?

Kirsten
Karchmer: Actually it takes quite a bit of time. What we are trying to do is
regulate your menstrual cycle. So the goal of the treatment for infertility is
not to get someone pregnant. Because just getting pregnant doesn’t finish the
job. What our goal is to help people to first get as healthy as possible, to
get there body functioning at the highest capacity possible. After there body
is functioning at full capacity we regulate the menstrual cycle. When somebody
is really healthy and there menstrual cycle is regular the side effects should
be they can get pregnant easily, and stay pregnant.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Ah, I see.

Kirsten
Karchmer: The end goal is a happy healthy baby.

Nicole
Tomlinson: So what we are really doing is not focusing on getting pregnant. We
are focusing on getting healthy.

Kirsten
Karchmer: Exactly.

Marla: I had
a friend who told me several years back that she had tried for at least two
years to get pregnant and nothing had worked in terms of medication. I think
she went and tried IVF. One of the things she did was acupuncture. So that kind
of just stuck in my mind I remembered it and so then I looked around here. And
within two moths of regular treatments twice a week, with the herbs the had
prescribed as well, my cycle started regulating. And I started ovulating, which
was a big deal for us. And then within a two month period of time I got
pregnant.

Alyssa: I started
coming about three to four months before we did our second in vitro twice a week.
And it relaxed me so much and it sort of made me calmer about the whole thing
as well as it was a very stressful medical procedure to go through. I just sort
I had a very different outlook at it and I felt that the doctor s and medicine
would do their part and the acupuncture helped me stay very calm and relaxed on
my part. Which I would joke to think was a really big help in having it all
work and keeping me in good health for having a pregnancy and have a baby. And
it worked and I now have a eight month old baby.

Nicole
Tomlinson: So we are looking at a lot of unusual things in here. Do any of
these herbs assist in the treatment of infertility?

Kirsten
Karchmer: In our clinic we use acupuncture and herbal medicine and nutritional
consulting and lifestyle consulting. The goal of herbal medicine in Chinese medicine
is to try to make a formula for patients that meets them exactly where they are
currently today in there menstrual cycle. During each week in the menstrual
cycle, something different is occurring.

Nicole
Tomlinson: So take us two someone who is maybe at day 14 in their cycle who is
coming in to seek treatment for infertility. What herbs would you use?

Kirsten
Karchmer: This is a problem because when somebody is coming in for ovulation
problems when they say oh I am having ovulation sores, I have polycystic
ovarian disease or I am not ovulating. Or I am ovulating to early or too late.
The cause of each one of those individual problems are different.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Once the whole process has gone through, we have gotten the acupuncture
for awhile, how long do you say it takes to conceive?

Kirsten
Karchmer: Once the patients who come to
us are feeling very healthy and their health has been restored and their
menstrual cycle is regulated and their basal body temperature falls within the
parameters we are looking for people are getting very close to pregnancy.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Do you recommend that they
not try while you’re trying to remedy the problem. While you’re trying to
really get our menstrual cycle back on track?

Kirsten
Karchmer: We do recommend that they wait three moths before they try to
conceive. Probably acupuncture can get a persons body strong enough to conceive
within five or sic or seven weeks, but it’s really just putting a band aid.
Like getting things shored up as best as possible but it’s not strong enough to
necessarily sustain the pregnancy and carry the baby term. So we really want
people to deliver a healthy baby.

Marla: I
cant say for sure, I mean I cant say that is exactly the variable that caused
the pregnancy, but I did see quite a bit of impact that it did have on my body
as compared to any kind of medicine I have been taking and any kind of other
doctors appointments that I had and so acupuncture is the only thing that I saw
that started to regulate my cycle. And the I was also very hopeful that this is
hopeful I can feel positive things in my body. I was having less aches and
pains I was sleeping better at night. So I saw other things in addition to just
the menstrual cycle changing.

Nicole
Tomlinson: When Mother Nature needs just a pinch to get started, acupuncture
might be the solution. Its not high science, just common sense. With all we do
today to disrupt the flow of nature, it takes old world know how to get us back
to basics. I am Nicole Tomlinson, and form all of us at Zen living thank you so
much for watching and we will catch you next time. Peace.

Medicine”

Nicole
Tomlinson: With health care cost on the rise everyone is looking for more
affordable alternatives. Holistic medicine is gaining popularity, but what is
it all about? We will take a look on today’s Zen Living.

I am here
with Luisa Mendoza from Mr. Natural and she is going to tell us a little bit
about Holistic Medicine. Hi Luisa.

Luisa
Mendoza: Hi Nicole.

Nicole
Tomlinson: How are you doing today?

Luisa
Mendoza: We are doing fine.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Good now please explain to me
about holistic medicine I don’t know much about the subject and I am really
curious to find out more.

Luisa
Mendoza: yes, holistic medicine is a medicine that embraces all things.
Therapies from the natural elements of nature that we can implement or incorporate
in our daily life.

Nicole
Tomlinson: So how did you initially get started in holistic, where you raised
this way? Or is it just something you just stumbled onto later in life?

Luisa
Mendoza: Since I was eighteen years old I got this information in a book in Mexico
where I am from. And this book was talking about all the truth about the food.
And I was in shock about it; I didn’t know how the animals are fed. And how
much toxins we can take without knowing. And then I realized that it was so
impotent for our health to be really in much better quality. Know exactly the
quantity but it is the quality. And then I started to study with the doctor
Estrada Valero in Mexico, at the school of natural medicine. And I have become
vegetarian because I understand that the natural food was very good.

Nicole
Tomlinson: How does it work different than taking the medicines?

Luisa
Mendoza: Well, the medicines are made in laboratories, but these are made by
nature. So it is as simple as that.

Katy: The
thing I like about holistic medicine is that it seems to focus more about
prevention than it does about just dealing with the problem if it happens. What
I think happens a lot in western medicine if somebody has a problem then they
go to a doctor instead of learning about there bodies.

Luisa
Mendoza: We have also, for example the geo therapy, which is made out of the
clay. When we use the clay mixed with water or juices or herbal teas. Then we
apply it to the kin or some areas of our body. It helps to heal because the
clay has the power of bringing out through the skin any problems or stimulate
the circulation or the detoxification.

Nicole
Tomlinson: So this is a way of detoxifying through the skin?

Luisa
Mendoza: Through the skin yes. For external use. But there is another one that
has the bentonite, that is also for inside. But sometimes the flavor of
bentonite is not very pleasing.

Nicole
Tomlinson: I have had bentonite in a liquid form and it was not too tasty. Is
there another option then?

Luisa
Mendoza: This one is another option. The purifiber has the bentonite in a good
amount but also has inside probiotics. Those probiotics are helping to strength
our immune system through the inside of the intestines sop then we have a
better flora, intestinal flora.

Nicole
Tomlinson: o let me see if I understand this correctly all of these things in
front of us are going to detoxify our system.

Luisa
Mendoza: Exactly we have to go through the basic step. Which is the digestive
system, the digestive system we use it as many times as we eat during the day.
So what we need to do is to clean our system, our intestines, our stomach. And
then we have to do it by things like this.

Or what I
have in this little cup is the flax meal. It is the flax seed grounded.

Nicole
Tomlinson: So this has, let me see if I can remember: Fiber, and omega three.

Luisa
Mendoza: But I like to suggest always the fiber with the aloe. Because the aloe
juice is the pure that we can see I will show you here look. It is very thick.
It’s a very thick juice and I can add it to my smoothie, one ounce a day and a
little bit of this fiber and this will make me feel better with my stomach
already.

The main
thing for someone who wants to go through the detoxification process is to
start the morning with something like this.

Nicole Tomlinson:
So a fiber cocktail or shake of some sort using the flax seed ground up and now
I have heard of aloe vera for your skin also, but this is for your stomach?

Luisa
Mendoza: Yes, this is the extra virgin aloe gel. So when we use that in the
morning it’s the first thing to open up to work the intestines, when we have
that work done then we can digest anything else.

Another
thing which we can use is the Phyto-therapy. Which is the use of the plants,
the botanical extracts of the active principals that each herb has to offer to
us.

Benito: I
think sometimes in our society, particularly pharmaceutical companies and
things of that sort sometimes divert attention from other remedies that may be
much better for you.

Nicole
Tomlinson: What is in my smoothie?

Luisa
Mendoza: Your smoothie was made by soy milk and papaya, fresh papaya. And mine
is made of pineapple and orange juice.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Now what is mine, soy milk and papaya? What are these two things
helpful for are these going to be healthy for my digestions?

Luisa
Mendoza: Well these are very healthy because the papaya has the enzyme papain,
papain is like a vegetable that will help the lining of the stomach and it
helps to move the intestine. Peristaltic movements are made by the papain.

Nicole
Tomlinson: So the enzymes in the papaya are going to help me breakdown my food?

Luisa
Mendoza: Yes, of course.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Well let’s dive in.

Luisa
Mendoza: And also the natural medicine is so helpful with all the food as
Hippocrates used to say, your food should be your medicine. And he really did
because when we take the freshest ingredients from the vegetables or fruits we
don’t have to spend anything else.

Nicole
Tomlinson: So your food should be your medicine, you shouldn’t have to take
loads of pills to feel better. It should be what you eat everyday.

Luisa
Mendoza: Exactly, the impact there many people these days they go only in this
way. And they don’t take medicines at all.

Nicole
Tomlinson: As you can see holistic medicine may just save you a trip to the
doctor I am Nicole Tomlinson, and form all of us at Zen living thanks for
watching and we will catch you next time. Peace.

Kirsten:
Well let’s do an experiment; is it ok if I touch your body? If I touch your
body here, do you feel something?

Nicole
Tomlinson: Mmm Hmm

Kirsten: How
do you know?

Nicole
Tomlinson: I don’t know, I guess I just
feel it. My brain tells me.

Kirsten:
Right so if I touch your arm here a message travel along your nerve to your
brain and gives you the message something is touching you. And your brain
processes that information and makes a decision. What should I do about that?
Is that a bee? Is that something warm that I love to touch, something that you
care for.

What we
believe is that there are many points all over the body that have very specific
functions these functions might tell the body to expand the blood vessels, to
narrow the blood vessels, to promote urination, to move fluids in the body. And
so when we put a needle in that, a needle conducts electricity.

So if we put
a needle in a point that causes the blood vessels to dilate, like if I put a
point right here in your hand. One of the functions of this point causes the
blood vessels to dilate; the side effect of that treatment is it will make our
headache go away.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Oh see I have heard that if I
massage this part right here, so that’s similar. SO there is all different
points all over the body that can trigger certain reactions to cure certain
ailments?

Kirsten:
Exactly, if you come to an acupuncturist and say I have headaches, the first
question we asked ourselves in our head is why? Why do you keep getting headaches?
What organ system in your body, what’s not working such that the side effect is
you continuing to get a headache?

Nicole
Tomlinson: Ah, so you go to the source
and that way you inevitably find a cure.

Kirsten: We
try to; of curse we never want to say well acupuncture can cure everything. But
certainly what we try to do is understand what is the root cause. That root
cause is frequently causing a lot of other symptoms. Insomnia or poor digestion
or gassy bloating or fatigue.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Now I have poor digestion. I every
once in awhile, just stomach distention, and pain in my stomach and I really
have a hard time, so acupuncture could help me with that?

Kirsten:
Acupuncture sure could help you. Now remember again that we could put. If you
came to me today and said I am very bloated and distended, I could put some
needles that would make those or give you some herbs that would make those
symptoms go away. That’s not a very complicated kind of treatment.

A more
masterful kind of treatment when you came in and said well I from time to time
have these problems I can ask myself why? Why do you have these problems? Where
another person doesn’t have those problems. So you want to investigate, you are
looking for all the clues that you can t make an appropriate diagnosis.

My old
teacher always said, the truth is, is that for the most part Chinese medicine
works, if it is not working it is because your diagnosis is wrong. So you
haven’t identified clearly what the real root is.

Nicole
Tomlinson: I see so what we have to do is go back through my own personal
history.

Kirsten:
your health history.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Find out along the way where we got troubled, figure out how my
digestive maladies were caused?

Kirsten:
Sure. Ok Nicole now as you talked about before you are having some digestive
problems, some gas some bloating. Are there any other symptoms that you want to
tell me that we haven’t talked about?

Nicole
Tomlinson: That’s pretty much it.

Kirsten: Ok.
You have been prepped for acupuncture, so your points have been cleaned with
some alcohol and now we are going to give you a treatment if that is ok with
you.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Yes.

Kirsten: Ok
so before I put in the points I just want to show you one more time, see we use
single use, disposable needles. So we are just going to touch this one alright?
We are not going to use it. So you can take your fingers, and see it is very
fine. You can try and bend it even.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Oh, it’s almost hair like.

Kirsten:
That’s why I use a guide tube, because the needle is so fine if I tried to just
insert it with my hands it will bend. Ok so because this is your first
acupuncture treatment we are going to do just a few needles. And what you can
expect to feel is the guide tube on your skin and then a little thump. Ok? Do
you have any concerns or questions?

Nicole
Tomlinson: No, I just wanted to know, just because it is my first time we are
going to do just a couple and as you gradually go back for treatments you
increase the amount?

Kirsten:
Yes, plus we want to, see different people respond to acupuncture in different
ways. Some people respond very strongly and some people don’t respond very much
at all and there’s people who respond somewhat in the middle. We want to give
you the appropriate needles and stimulation for your body. Now the needles are
going to go into muscles. So it is important that once the needles are in you
try to remain still.

So you feel
the guide tube on your skin and a little thump. How does that feel?

Nicole
Tomlinson: That one actually kind of hurt a little bit.

Kirsten:
Acupuncture is looking for what is blocked in your body and trying to open it
up. So as those places that re blocked open up sometimes they will stagnate in
other places, and then the acupuncture can work it out and you will feel it
just dissipate.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Ah, so I see it flows just like water entering a tube.

Kirsten:
Sure your bodies’ energy should be circulating through your body and when it’s
blocked sometimes you will feel some pressure and then as that blockage
dissipates you will feel some relief in that. But I am telling you this so that
you won’t be concerned there is nothing to be worried about. There is o needles
near your internal organs, although sometimes there are.

And so you
can just relax, most people go to sleep when they get acupuncture, snoring is
fine. Drooling is fine, I will wake you up when our treatment is over.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Thank you so much.

Kirsten: Ok
is the temperature comfortable for you?

Nicole
Tomlinson: Yes it is. If you are looking
to get to the root of your problems, acupuncture just might be the way to go,
as you can see it is relaxing, relatively pain free and totally natural. I am
Nicole Tomlinson, and from all of us at Zen Living thank you so much for
watching and we will catch you next time. Peace.

Zen Living

Episode
“Building a green home”

Nicole
Tomlinson: Bau-Biologie, green building, breathing homes. What does this all
mean? It’s about creating a more environmentally friendly living space. This is
George Swanson, a building biologist and he is here to tell us exactly what
that means. Hi George. Would you please go into Bau-Biologie, would you please
elaborate on what exactly that means?

George
Swanson: Ok, Bau-Biologie roughly means building biology. It started about 65
to 70 years ago in villages in Germany where they were studying the health
effects of construction on small villages. And found a direct correlation
between the building materials and the health of the people in the village.

Nicole
Tomlinson: What specifically did they find?

George
Swanson: Well they found one village where they actually relocated an entire
village because people would have four times the cancer rate because of water
courses under the buildings.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Ok, so you’re a building biologist, what exactly is your job
description?

George
Swanson: Primarily at this point we are consulting, but also fully doing design
build for buildings for people with chemical sensitivity. So folks who don’t
really have an option and do have to get out of their buildings.

Nicole
Tomlinson: There homes are toxic to them so you help them to find ways to use
green materials to keep them healthy?

George
Swanson: Exactly.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Great now this is your home?

George
Swanson: Uh, huh.

Nicole
Tomlinson: So George you have developed a very unconventional way for treating
waste water. Can you elaborate a little bit about that?

George
Swanson: Ok, what we are looking at here is a gravel marsh, black water
treatment system. Where all the black water of the house comes into these two
tanks that we see right below us here. And there are four manifolds that come
out from the bottom of those tanks that spreads the black water twenty inches
down into the gravel pit. And then the roots from these plants actually purify
the black water as it runs through.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Now how is this better for us living wise than say the conventional
techniques?

George
Swanson: Well we don’t have to ever empty our tanks for one thing. So the tanks
self clean themselves. And the water that’s discharges from the end of this
gravel bed is fully safe for watering our plants.

Nicole
Tomlinson: so it’s all using everything that comes out of your home and
recycling it back into your garden or you’re…

George
Swanson: Right the water becomes safe its actually full potable water coming
out the other end.

Nicole
Tomlinson: So you could drink it?

George
Swanson: Well, no it’s too nutrient rich. Now you could sand filter it and
drink it. We recently did a system like that. But we want to use it in its full
nutrient rich state.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Thank you so much for having me in your home. Now we spoke before
about a breathing home. Is this qualified as a breathing home?

George
Swanson: Yeah, this particular construction was 12 inch clay treated wood chip
block. That’s treated with a natural clay plaster to create the breathing effect.

Nicole
Tomlinson: What is this little rock bed right here?

George
Swanson: Well this is what we call breathing gill. We try to make this a
signature on most of the homes that we do. It’s actually open to the earth. And
it actually affects the electro magnetic s of the home. We have the natural
earth smells.

Nicole Tomlinson:
Ok, so there’s no foundation here?

George
Swanson: No foundation here. Now this is part of our original cooling system
where this was all plumbed. And this little cove that you see here was
sprinkled with cold water that comes from the bottom of the cistern we saw out
side.

Nicole Tomlinson:
If I was to dig up all these rocks, I would find dirt on the bottom?

George
Swanson: Mostly dirt right.

Nicole
Tomlinson: And do you ever have any trouble with bugs or anything? No water
comes up through there when it rains?

George
Swanson: None of those problems. We will also look at these two Volkswagen car
radiators that are mounted on the wall.

Nicole
Tomlinson: So wait, let’s take that back, Volkswagen car radiators?

George
Swanson: Car radiators, they are run on twelve volts, just like your car is run
off of twelve volts, off the solar system. But this upper one it actually has
cool water that is being pumped from the bottom of that cistern. So the water
is about 61 degrees down there. It just runs over the car radiator with a tiny
fan behind it. Now we are used to feeling like forty three degree air so that doesn’t
feel like really cold air.

So that why we only turn it down at night too
charge the walls. By charging the walls we mean there is a concrete core in the
middle of this soft clay treated woodchip block and that’s being cooled by what
we call a radiant cool effect.

Nicole
Tomlinson: There’s no radical up and down shifting because of the heat?

George
Swanson: Right because it takes a full twelve hours for the heat or cool to
leave the wall. So we are saturating it at nigh with the cool nighttime
temperature, and then we get the free cooling all day long.

Nicole Tomlinson:
So we talked before about your water bill, let’s talk a little bit about your
electric bill.

George
Swanson: Ok, it is averaging about $35 to $39 a month.

Nicole
Tomlinson: American?

Swanson: US, yeah!

Nicole
Tomlinson: That’s insane. Alright so bottom line, what is the average cost of a
typical green home?

George
Swanson: Well, in the last couple of years we have been averaging about
$170-$280,000.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Well that sounds pretty comparable to a conventional home.

George
Swanson: Right most of those homes are between the 1100, 1800, and 2000 square
foot. So about a hundred to a hundred and thirty dollars a square foot.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Ok great. So if you’re looking to live a more sustainable lifestyle green
building is defiantly the way to go. Thank you so much George for showing me
this beautiful green home.

George

Nicole
Tomlinson: Synthetic chemicals, pesticides, hormones. Buzz words used to make
us go organic, but are these words of any value or is it just a lot of hype
trying to get us to spend more money? I mean after all living the organic
lifestyle really can increase your budget. I am here today to find out exactly
what and where we should go organic without busting our wallets.

Our guest
today is Patrick Timpone of Timpones Market. Hi Patrick.

Patrick
Timpone: Hello there how are you?

Nicole
Tomlinson: Could you please tell me why should Americans go organic?

Patrick
Timpone: Well, there is no chemicals or pesticides in our organic food. So its pesticides
or other than that are the best foods to eat.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Which of these three items would normally contain the most
pesticides that I should start buying only organically?

Patrick
Timpone: Bananas are traditionally sprayed very highly. Grapes are sprayed very
highly. Strawberries.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Now I eat bananas every day they are one of my favorite fruits. Tell
me why it is so important that these are bought only organically.

Patrick
Timpone: Well there is a lot of different things about bananas. You see right
now they have these little specks of brown things in bananas.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Those are the seeds right?

Patrick
Timpone: Well that’s where seeds used to be, there all pretty neutered, or
sterile, so there really not that good of a fruit to eat at all. Bananas
because they have no life force or energy or chi in them.

Nicole
Tomlinson: I can’t really afford to go organic all the way. So what would be
another key staple, besides just the bananas and grapes and such, to
incorporate into my grocery list?

Patrick
Timpone: I think lettuce, lettuce and celery and those, the greens.

Nicole
Tomlinson: What do you think is going to happen if Americans don’t really start
to change the way that they eat and what they buy at their stores?

Patrick
Timpone: Well I think what’s happening is already happening. America is the
sickest country on the planet and we spend more on health care than any country
in the world.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Healthcare does get expensive.

Patrick
Timpone: Well yeah because it doesn’t work because they are just going after
the symptoms of all of these diseases, and so people are getting sick with high
blood pressure and cholesterol and Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s and all these
things when they are 60 and 70 years old because of pollutions and chemicals
and plastics and environment and food.

Most people
around the country that run the world don’t really get it. That we are what we
eat. And they still don’t get it. We don’t know the true benefits of not having
chemicals in our diet. All we do know is that the chemicals and the
preservatives and all the other things do cause imbalances in the kidneys and
the liver and in other areas that cause malfunctions of the body. The trick is
to keep as clean as a diet as you possibly can.

Nicole
Tomlinson: This is really delicious. Mmmm, that’s good, that’s really good. Ok
Jennifer when I first got here I thought this was just decoration. But I am
guessing that its not, what is its purpose?

Jennifer
Pittman: This is wheat grass. Ok this is ocean grown wheat grass. People use
wheat grass for their b vitamins, cleans your blood it is high in chlorophyll,
but this is ocean grown so it has ninety two minerals in the soil because it is
grown with a concentrate of ocean water.

Nicole
Tomlinson: Alright we are ready for the shot.

Jennifer
Pittman: Ok, here you go.

Nicole
Tomlinson: I am a little nervous, ok so, bottoms up! Mmm, that taste a little
bit like grass. Like I just chewed on my lawn, but there was a sweet after
taste, so it wasn’t so bad. I was expecting it to be a lot worse. I hope I have gave you a little bit more
insight on the benefits of going organic, at least now you know a few key items
so you can substitute a little bit here and a little bit there. It can be a
little bit more expensive, but in the long run think of all the money you will
be saving on doctor bills, perhaps even saving your life.

I would like
to thank Patrick Timpone and Jennifer for her delicious smoothies and wheat
grass. From al of us here at Zen Living I am Nicole Tomlinson it has been a
pleasure to be here with you today and we will see you next time.

<media:text type="html">Pilot #1 “What is Macrobiotics?”

Nicole Tomlinson: If you could eat good food that not only was good for you but could help cure you of certain ailments, would you? Of course you would right? But if you’re anything like me you’re probably thinking do I have to sacrifice the taste?

Well let’s find out, today we are going to be exploring the world of Macrobiotics.
This is Eduardo Longoria and he’s here to shed some light on the subject of macrobiotics, here at Casa De Luz. Hi Eduardo. Would you please talk a little bit about Macrobiotics philosophy and tradition?

Eduardo Longoria: Sure I think we need to start with what the name means. Macro meaning big, the big picture. Bionics life. So how do we create a great life for ourselves? And so this place is a place where we explore that in many different ways.

Nicole Tomlinson: What exactly does a person do to consider themselves macrobiotic?

Eduardo Longoria: Well, I remember my early years, which was about twenty two years ago. I called the food cooked this way macrobiotic food and I will never forget my friend who said, “There’s no such thing as macrobiotic food.”

Nicole Tomlinson: Food is just food.

Eduardo Longoria: Food is just food, right. Now does it conform with your ideas of what is going to create balance and health in your life.

Nicole Tomlinson: So that’s really the key, what to create balance. How do we create balance and health, individually? To cure diseases or prevent illnesses.

Eduardo Longoria: Absolutely.
John (macro Star): About seven years ago I started eating here at Casa De Luz, and I stopped getting sick. And I love to eat the greens, the squash; it just makes me feel great.

Nicole Tomlinson: Tell me why it’s best to eat what’s in season now.

Eduardo Longoria: We get in trouble when we start second guessing nature.

Nicole Tomlinson: That’s a good point.

Eduardo Longoria: So what’s growing today is probably going to be best to keep us in balance with what’s happening today.

Nicole Tomlinson: Who exactly is a really good candidate for stepping into this lifestyle?

Eduardo Longoria: Well anybody that wants to, that’s unhappy with who they are and wants to be better.

Nicole Tomlinson: Now another thing I wanted to know, does it cost a lot to live this way. Because I know some people like to, they get very comfortable in there ninety nine cent McDonalds burgers.
Eduardo Longoria: So being macrobiotic you’re going to see the big picture and the big picture says, “Well what’s going to happen to me years from now if I eat this way?” And maybe you don’t even have to wait years, because a lot of the foods that are being served in the fast food establishments, Is not food.
And our bodies aren’t designed to have that inside of them, so you will end up paying a lot more at the doctors. One of the basic tenets of macrobiotics, which is what a great teacher, George Asawa said he said, “Non Carazo.” Non Carazo is Latin for don’t believe it.

Nicole Tomlinson: Don’t believe it, anything I tell you don’t believe.

Eduardo Longoria: Don’t believe it you need to test it for yourself. Each individual needs to find out what’s best for themselves. Personally, I try to stay away from the adjectives good and bad, healthy or unhealthy. Because what may be healthy for one person is unhealthy for another.

Nicole Tomlinson: So everything changes specifically per, each individual. So what’s right for me, may not be right for you, may not be right for somebody else living wherever in the world.

Eduardo Longoria: At the same time I can generally tell you that if you live in the arctic circle, and there importing bananas from central America, and your living in a igloo, there not going to be really great for you.

Nicole Tomlinson: But if I live somewhere around the equator, eating bananas might be very, very good for me.

Eduardo Longoria: Humans have moved indoors now, we have artificial climate. In fact I mentioned the Arctic Circle. Well you could live in the Arctic Circle, and have a Central American climate.

Nicole Tomlinson: Mm hmm, and its yeah, it fells very warm in side your home.

Eduardo Longoria: yes.

Nicole Tomlinson: But its not necessarily what’s natural for the body. So we need to get back to nature is that what your saying?

Eduardo Longoria: Yes, the more we connect with the natural rhythms’ of nature, then the healthier we are going to be.

Nicole Tomlinson: Tell me a little bit about Macrobiotic cuisine; does it taste as good as it sounds?

Eduardo Longoria: That’s totally individual. The way I see it is if you’re a couch potato. And you decide well you know I’m not going to be this anymore I am going to start excercising. First day of exercise is going to be very painful.

Nicole Tomlinson: Oh we have all been there.

Eduardo Longoria: Second day is going to be even more painful, because now your sore from yesterday. But if you stay with it, within a month you start liking it. And so you exercise here, and you enjoy it over here. But you can keep doing it so that they come closer and closer together.

Nicole Tomlinson: So that you enjoy it at the same time. So your saying the food is the same way.

Eduardo Longoria: Exactly the same way.

Nicole Tomlinson: Maybe you wont love it at first, but with enough time, and you start seeing the benefits you would really start to enjoy it. You know its been very informative being with you here today, thank you for opening my eyes up to such a wonderful place in Austin I never knew about before. I was very good to meet you, thank you so much.

Eduardo Longoria: To your health.

Nicole Tomlinson: Cheers.

<media:text type="html">Episode #3 “Asian Supermarkets” Nicole Tomlinson: You have seen them everywhere and just about every American city has one. But did you ever go inside? And if so how do you know really what you’re buying? What am I talking about? Asian supermarkets. Once you go inside it’s a completely different atmosphere. Different sites sounds and aromas. Let’s check it out. This is Lan and she is going to be showing us around today. Lan can you show us some tings that we might not typically find at a regular grocery store? Lan Ly: First item, lemon grass. It’s a spice that we can chop up and use in cooking. Or sometimes when your not feeling well you can boil this in a pot of water and use it like a sauna. This is gobo root. This is grown all over Japan and we have it here now. Usually we can make soup with this, make a stock with this. It’s great as a blood purifier, and for digestion. Nicole Tomlinson: It purifies the blood? So good for detoxing. Getting all those impurities out of your system. Lan Ly: Yes. Now this is bitter melon. This we can use in a soup or stir fry as well and this is great for lowering blood sugar as well. Nicole Tomlinson: Ok, it looks kind of like cucumber how does it taste. Lan Ly: It’s a bit bitter, there’s a trick to when you’re making soup, you can add soy bean. That will less the bitterness and also give you the benefits. This is awaeah, you can make soups or make it in a shake. And a lot of women use this through there third trimester. Nicole Tomlinson: Of pregnancy? Ok, and what does it do for them? Lan Ly: It helps them produce mucus and to speed up and ease delivery. Nicole Tomlinson: Oh so women who are preparing to give birth should defiantly add this to there diet. To make that a little easier, oh that’s great. Supermarket customer: I shop at an Asian supermarket, because I get a better choice of vegetables and Asian products at a better price than the regular supermarket. I but lots of dumplings, because I can keep these in the freezer and make those really fast. And lots of vegetables. Pea shoots, Chinese broccoli, snow peas, bean sprouts. I can buy them in bulk and lot fresher than I can at the supermarket I normally go to. Nicole Tomlinson: If you are a vegetarian than the Asian market is your best friend. Lan what can we eat that’s not tofu all the time? Lan Ly: this right here is a vege king prawn. And this is black pepper smoky meat. Nicole Tomlinson: Ok, what kind of meat does this taste like? Is it more like chicken? Lan Ly: More like fish. Nicole Tomlinson: More like fish, oh of, and how do you prepare this? Lan Ly: This could be put in to a stir fry as well. Nicole Tomlinson: Just grab some veggies toss it all in a pan and there you go, easy enough. Lan Ly: This right here, is a veggie hot pot. You can make hot pot with this. You can just make a broth and set it on your table, this with some sauce and veggies. And you’re ready to go. Nicole Tomlinson: Ok great so it’s a fast easy meal to make for the family. Are all these pretty inexpensive? What are we looking at spending here? Lan Ly: Yes they are, they range from about 2.99 to about 4.99. Nicole Tomlinson: Really 2.99 for this will feed probably two people. And 4.99 feed your whole family. That’s great. Were here in an isle that’s filled with a bunch of different herbs. Can you tell me a little bit about some special ones? Lan Ly: Yes, this one here is a mix of herbal items, this we can make into a soup as well. And usually the best way is with black chicken which we can cook as well with this. Slow cook overnight, and that draws all the nutrients out from this. And a lot of women after giving birth use this. Just to replenish there energy, and nutrients. This is a wolf berry, or goji berry. This as well we slow cook, and drink all the nutrients that come out, and this is very good for your eyesight. This is dried honey suckle. Sometimes when we are needing to cool down our bodies, we would slow cook this, and drink the juices form this. Supermarket Customer: I can’t find quiet a few things I want in any other store. Whole food suggested I stop here. Nicole Tomlinson: Lans put together some personal and helpful items to show us. This is a rice cooker, we just open it up like this, and we just add the rice. Nicole Tomlinson: Is this what you use to add the rice? How do you know how much water to add? Lan Ly: If you have say three cups of rice, you would add water up to the line that has the three. Nicole Tomlinson: Now do you cook only white rice, or any other different kind of rice? What can you sue? Lan Ly: You can also cook brown rice, or white rice as well. Nicole Tomlinson: Now what is this right here, this little contraption, looks a little scary. Lan Ly: This Is an ear wax remover. Nicole Tomlinson: And that? I don’t even know what that is. Is it some sort of office supply or something? Lan Ly: This is a tongue scraper. Nicole Tomlinson: Oh ok, so I just bend it like this and I… Green tea, that’s pretty simple, what is green tea really good for? Lan Ly: Well green tea has cholestrol lowering properties, and also anti cancer benefits. Nicole Tomlinson: Oh, ok, so it has antioxidants in it. Ok, good. And what is this green stuff>? Lan Ly: And this is eucalyptus oil. Nicole Tomlinson: Eucalyptus oil. Ok, and what does it do? Lan Ly: This is very mild to where you can put it on newborns and babies, and this will protect them from wind and all that. And protect them from catching colds too easily. Nicole Tomlinson: Oh ok I see so it’s a good preventative method for you if you have children. Tiger balm, what do we do with tiger balm? Lan Ly: Tiger balm, it’s very good for aches and pains. Headaches, you can apply that to the temples. Nicole Tomlinson: Right here and right here? Lan Ly: Yes, and great also for mosquito bites. Nicole Tomlinson: Now what is this Indian god lotion Lan? Let’s talk about this. Lan Ly: Well this is a sexual enhancement lotion for men, and you would just spread it directly on to the genitals to prolog erection. Nicole Tomlinson: Yeah, it says long play, that’s exciting. Thank you so much for showing us around your store today Lan I really appreciate that. It seems to be all of the time we have for today, but I guess we have taken some of the guesswork out of Asian supermarkets for you. From all of us here at Zen Living thanks for watching, I am Nicole, and Ill check you next time. Peace. </media:text>

<media:text type="html">Episode #2 “Cooking a Macrobiotic meal.”

Nicole Tomlinson: Hi I am here with Dawn Pallavi, macrobiotic chef extraordinaire. And she's going to show us how to cook up some delicious macrobiotic meals.
Hi dawn, what do you have for us today?

Dawn Pallavi: We are going to make a few things. Were going to use tofu, so many people are afraid of tofu.

Nicole Tomlinson: I know they are, they really are because they don’t know how to cook it properly. But you’re going to take care of that.

Dawn Pallavi: I am going to take care of that.

Nicole Tomlinson: Great.

Dawn Pallavi: The good ting about tofu is that it’s bland, and it has no flavor.

Nicole Tomlinson: Ok, I have never heard people say that bland and no flavor is a good thing to eat.

Dawn Pallavi: Well it’s a good thing because you can make it taste like whatever you want.

Nicole Tomlinson: That’s great ok, so what are we going to make it taste like?

Dawn Pallavi: So we are going to fry it.

Nicole Tomlinson: Ok so you’re setting it in the pan.

Dawn Pallavi: Were setting it into the pan, the oil is hot, so this pot was heated before hand. It’s really simple to do; I am going to set it in the pan here, and were just really literally going to let it cook on each side.

Nicole Tomlinson: How long?

Dawn Pallavi: It usually takes about ten, fifteen minutes depending on how hot your pan is. This is going to be a homemade granola. And I find that most granola has sugar in it.

Nicole Tomlinson: Yes it does, very, very sweet, high in calories.

Dawn Pallavi: And so I want something sweet and crunchy, but without refined sugar.

Nicole Tomlinson: Ok how do we do that?

Dawn Pallavi: So what we are going to do is this is really simple. We are going to take some rolled oats.

Nicole Tomlinson: Are these like your regular, you find them in a box at the health food store?

Dawn Pallavi: Yeah so it’s inexpensive, rolled oats are very inexpensive. So you can add whatever you want. I like to put sesame seeds in there, because they are really high in calcium.
So I like to use pecans, you can use any nuts. If you like to use sunflower seeds, again a less expensive option. Now again if I am going to add dry fruit I will add it at the end. This is maple syrup. 100 percent pure maple syrup.

Nicole Tomlinson: this is actually healthy for you?

Dawn Pallavi: Yeah, it’s better than refined sugar.

Nicole Tomlinson: Ok, how come?

Dawn Pallavi: Its less concentrated, it doesn’t have as much as an effect on your blood sugar as cane sugar does. And it comes from more of a temperate climate instead of a tropical zone.
Now were going to take this, we are going to put it on a cookie sheet. We are going to put it in the oven, stir it every fifteen minutes, and we have homemade granola.
Poached pears are another thing that’s really simple. I like again, things that I can set aside. I have an eight year old at home.

Nicole Tomlinson: Yes, he has to be able to walk away and come back without you slaving over a hot stove.

Dawn Pallavi: Exactly, so what were going to do, really simple. Is were going to take this pear, were going to pour a little bit of apple juice in the pot. Organic of course. Were going to set the pear in there, and a pinch of sea salt in. Were going to put on the top.

Nicole Tomlinson: Why do you pout sea salt?

Dawn Pallavi: It brings out the sweetness.

Gigi (macrobiotic eater): I like my macrobiotic food because it’s so tasty, and I feel like its very
healthy, and it’s organic. I just really enjoy it.

Joy (macro eater): I am eating berry parfait, and I love it because it’s fun, beautiful and delicious.

Nicole Tomlinson: What are we doing with this parsley?
Dawn Pallavi: With this parsley, we are going to make the tofu beautiful.

Nicole Tomlinson: Oh, ok.

Dawn Pallavi: So we are just going to put this in the plate here. And you notice how it just gets nice and golden brown.

Nicole Tomlinson: So we are going to just start breaking of sprigs of this parsley here?

Dawn Pallavi: Yeah, just put them in. We don’t really need a sauce or anything for this because it’s got all the flavor in the tofu itself.
So we have our pears now, we are just going to kind of spoon this over nicely. See how soft and juicy it is.

Nicole Tomlinson: Mmm, that looks nice. That looks really good. Alright Dawn I cannot wait any longer lets dig in.
Mmm, that dressing is really light.

Dawn Pallavi: The tofu is the best.

Nicole Tomlinson: That is so good. That is so good. You really wouldn’t even be able to tell that, actually this is really good for you. You know I am loving this and I am loving the kale. I didn’t expect to, because sometime green leafy things sometime are kind of scary, but very good.

Dawn Pallavi: Can we skip and just go to desert?

Nicole Tomlinson: Let’s just go to desert.

Dawn Pallavi: Little bit of the syrup.

Nicole Tomlinson: Yes it smells delicious. Alright slice of pear here get some granola on there. Catch this? This is delicious. Oh my goodness.

Dawn Pallavi: So sweet isn’t it?

Nicole Tomlinson: This is my new favorite desert, I am taking this home.

Recipe:

2 tsp organic sesame oil
Tofu
Rolled oats
Nuts
Dried fruit
Maple syrup
Apple juice
Sea salt
Pear
Parsley
Kale
Currant
